#22 Cuando Era Puertorriqueña

This was book #22 of my goal of 50 for 2019. It was a recommendation by someone that studied Chicano Studies in college. I love getting recommendations from others as it gives me a chance to immerse myself in something I would not have done otherwise. With little vested, I borrowed it from the library and waited for it to arrive. You would be surprise how long it takes sometimes. And that does not include the time it takes to pick it up...because I don't know about you, but my free minutes are a hot commodity.

I started with the Prologue. Who reads the Prologue? Not me, that is for sure, but for some reason this time I did. To my surprise, it was the prologue that made me want to dive deeper into it. It is what inspired me to write the "Hispanic or Latino" post. I too have always felt confused about that terms. Similar to the author, I moved to the US from another country with little language acquisition.

We all know that the back cover is suppose to give you an insight into the book, help you select it or not. Well, after reading the book, I will say that the back cover did not do the book justice. The back cover blurb was much tender and idyllic than the book itself. The author's childhood and subsequent move to the US was harsh, particularly as a child. Esmeralda's journey offers perspective of the pros and cons of the culture crash and assimilation process, obstacles and yet the human strength to succeed. Definitely worth a read!
